A STYLISH COASTAL HOME HIGHLIGHTING TWO DISTINCTIVE SIDES OF THE PACIFIC: CALIFORNIA & AUSTRALIA.

When you’re wandering the streets of Hermosa Beach, keep your eyes peeled for one of our most recent projects. This Seaside Living property incorporates the Hermosa Beach location with the clients’ Australian heritage to truly transform this house into a luxury home.

The house was designed by architect Joyce Flood. Since it’s so close to the beach, Flood wanted to ensure that it incorporated a California coastal style. It was also important this home included clever twists which would distinguish it from the other nearby houses. The tiled risers on the entry stairs are a distinctive design element and provide a detail unique to the neighboring homes.

One of the main architectural elements in the entertainment room is the wrap around windows which give you a panoramic view of the Pacific. To enhance the architecture we chose a gorgeous ombre fabric from Zak & Fox which mimics the colors of the sky and the ocean. Even when the shades are drawn, the effect of the drapery is just as dramatic and stunning as the views of the ocean and the sky. Another fun touch in this room is the beer tap! This “mini pub” is both attractive and convenient for entertaining purposes. Imagine pouring a beer from the tap and watching the sunset on the upper patio...cheers please!

Since there is such an expanse of windows, there leaves only a little room for art on the walls. As a result, the art needed to be large, special, and dramatic for this room. The artwork featured above the sofa is an original aboriginal piece from the client’s native Australia.

The open-concept kitchen was designed with space and simplicity in mind. It features an accent island with a custom built table for casual dining. The window fabric was sourced from a fabric designer in Australia and represents the fauna that grows down under.

We had so much fun focusing on the small details in the powder room. The glass bird accessories accompany the whimsical wallcovering from Spoonflower so well! This room truly embodies California’s South Bay. From the light fixtures to the shutter style cabinet doors with their starfish handles are all coastal influences that make this room unique.

The master bedroom is elegant with its organic monochromatic vibe. The space is very natural with agate tables and tropical plants. We personalized this bedroom by selecting a headboard fabric that is reminiscent of plants grown in Australia. The bedding is also custom.

The homeowners have two teenage boys and we knew they would take advantage of the location of their new home by frequenting the beach and surfing. As a result, a shower that was both tall enough and long enough to rinse off their boards post surf was a must. This surfboard-friendly shower is complemented with coastal accents such as the photo of the Hermosa Beach waves, the lantern style light fixtures and painted vanity.

As an interior designer, I love maximizing space and in this room we really pushed it to the max! What was intended to be a typical closet we transformed into a space for the homeowner to pursue her passion of sewing. This wallpaper is bright and funky...the perfect inspiration for a creative space.

The tile in the shower of the outdoor shower symbolizes the differing shades of the ocean. It gives tribute to both sides of the Pacific: their native Australia and their new home in Hermosa Beach.
