Why Wallpaper is Here to Stay

In the ever-evolving landscape of interior design, trends come and go like fleeting seasons. Yet, amidst the whirlwind of fads and fleeting fashions, there’s one thing designers are continuing to turn to – wallpaper. Once considered something you only see at your Grandmother’s house, wallpaper has staged a remarkable comeback in recent years, reclaiming its status as a versatile, stylish, and enduring design choice. So, what makes wallpaper so timeless? Between the endless variety, durability, and longevity, wallpaper makes an instant impact. And let’s be honest, there are so many breathtaking designs out there that it’s hard to say no. Let’s discuss why wallpaper is what’s hot and why it’s here to stay.

Artfully Designed

So, let’s say you were at Art Basel last year and fell in love with an artist's work. But with the price tag that came along with it, you said your goodbyes in Miami. In 2024, we’re seeing an uptick in wallpaper as art. With today’s technology, you can take what you’re inspired by, have it printed as wallpaper, and apply it where your heart desires. Not only that but artists and designers alike are collaborating with wallpaper vendors to create one-of-a-kind collections that highlight their personal style. Think outside of the frame; you won’t regret it.

See You on the Ceiling

We’re not sure if you’ve caught on, but in our corner of the world, we’re not afraid to go bold and encourage our clients to do the unexpected. This brings us to a particularly unique location for wallpaper – look up, it’s on the ceiling! We currently have four projects in the works where we’ve taken this idea and run with it, and our clients are running along with us. Taking inspiration from European frescos, where not a single wall, floor, or ceiling remains untouched, placing wallpaper on the ceiling makes the room more unique and creates a focal point. Whether you select a colorful print that immediately defines the room or a gorgeous, neutral silk that oozes sophistication, wallcovering on the ceiling is a must-try.

The Return of the Accent Wall

Yes, we know, the age-old go-to for wallpaper application was the approachable accent wall. This has been done so much that the concept has become tired. However, the accent wall is making a resurgence in popularity and is still designer-approved. Striking and vivid prints are surefire ways to give your wall the attention it deserves. We want to see more accent walls that add understated (or obvious) luxury. We’re talking wallcoverings made in fine materials such as wood veneer or leather and artisan-made selections where you can see and feel the craftsmanship that has gone into its production. The wallcovering featured in the bedroom design below is made of authentic washi, a layered design handmade with tools such as combs and chopsticks, creating a specialty wallcovering that panels beautifully.

Must-Have Murals

Another example of an homage to art is the now in-demand mural. Again, taking inspiration from the fully adorned walls of palaces past, we’re seeing full scale murals in homes, hotels, restaurants, and more. Whether printed or hand-painted, these designs always appear unique. Celebrating styles of Chinoiserie, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and 19th Century France, murals have made their comeback to ‘wow’ the design industry. The intent behind each mural is that these beautiful scenes transport you to another place and time, one that is both seemingly real yet completely whimsical.

Geometry 101

If there’s one class to go back to your high school days and retake, may we suggest Geometry 101. We’re not asking you to measure a parallelogram or tell us the angle of an isosceles triangle. No, this class has a design spin. Simply observe the character of a geometric printed wallpaper like the one seen below. Geometric prints are big for 2024, and the oversized designs are contemporary, indicating you won’t regret your decision to do something a little different. Try the trend in a bright, metallic, or more muted color. The trick is to keep the scale large, allowing your eye to delight in the fun shapes moving across the space.

In conclusion, the resurgence of wallpaper in contemporary interior design is not merely a passing trend but a testament to its enduring appeal and timeless charm. With its endless variety and instant impact, wallpaper continues to captivate homeowners, designers, and decorators alike. Whether you're seeking to make a bold statement or create a subtle backdrop, wallpaper offers a versatile and stylish solution for transforming any space into a haven of beauty and inspiration. So, embrace that wallpaper is here to stay and discover its endless possibilities for enhancing your home.
